ROEM Development has always turned challenges into opportunities. This time the challenge is in San Jose’s Almaden Valley. The project site has complex “edges” all around: single-family homes multi-family apartments, a commercial building and a highway. ROEM has successfully transformed the empty parcel into a high quality independent senior housing community, at affordable rates.
The building takes on a simple donut-shape design, where the heart of the “donut” becomes the central protected courtyard for senior activities. The community room and the main lobby have direct views into this elegant outdoor space. With sufficient visual connection, the site and the building come together. As for the residents, those indoors are brought visually closer together to the ones outdoors. Social interactions among seniors are fostered.
The craftsman style architecture offers the feeling of an old, small town. Patios and balconies are embraced by romantic overhead trellises, offering the residents a sense of coziness. Adjacent to the housing community is a relaxingly quiet public park where the seniors can stroll and picnic under the shades. Such a conveniently located recreation facility makes their living experience richer and more complete.
